EPub Gone riding boots Giles has adopted Manicom s almost laid back style of writing that helps bring the journey to life He describes things well and manages to add in some fascinating history snippets from the various locations as well as many humorous anecdotes to keep the whole text light and entertaining as well as informative However rather than just being another account of somebody who has been fortunate enough to be able to take a year out and find themselves or tick something else off the bucket list this book has a few differences that make it stand out It is definitely not just another book about a mid life crisis on a BMW GS following well worn routes around the world For starters Giles breaks up the journey with a several stints as a volunteer on several worthy projects has his wife join him for several stages and manages to do some group riding along the way with fellow travellers It is a book about travel culture and geography rather than a motorcycle book just detailing places visited and he is certainly not a hardcore biker also blessed with mechanical aptitude as he tells in a somewhat self depreciating manner There are some images dotted throughout with a small colour plate section with an English cup of tea and enjoy the ramblings of Dom the overlander Martin Solm www. Superb book witty and such a good read If this does not inspire you to travel the world nothing will The worrying thing is Dom took the exact route I have been dreaming of I had better start planning Gone Riding This is a good news bad news review I originally purchased this book to read about a motorcycle trip through the Americas and Africa This book would have been shorter if that is what it was It is the story of a motorcycle trip but the reader is subjected to the author s political frustrations and lectures throughout the work I have found this to be quite common with British motorcycle authors At a recent Horizons Unlimited Traveller s Meeting I mentioned that I was reading the book and several fellow travelers told me they had started the book but were unable finish it Unfortunately I am one of those that once I start a book I have to finish it When Mr Giles writes about his trip the book is actually quite good It is well written and he includes bits of history although sometimes tainted that brings the book to life Mr Giles has obviously spoken with Sam Manicom and has copied his style Unfortunately the author is not satisfied with just being a travel writer It seems he wants to be a political pundit as well Here are a few expamples using the Kindle locations as reference Loc 995 I explained what a fantastic time I was having how wonderful British Columbia was play to your audience and whenever I needed a laugh I just made fun of AmericansLoc 1203 by the evening I d be in gun toting AmericaLoc 1226 Describe crossing the border into the US Perhaps any sudden movement would has spooked her into tasering meLoc 1249 Perhaps the USA really was full of gun toting lunatics.
