55 shipping Sick Little Monkeys The Unauthorized Ren Stimpy Story More information would have been great but the information this book had did not disappoint 1629331821 Ren and Stimpy changed animation for the better The show as a whole doesn t hold up but some skits are still genius While many have used this book as a way to show John K wasn t the mastermind behind the series the book actually proves otherwise It says that even after he was ousted the series continued to be problematic for Nick and was constantly late and behind schedule Everyone continued thinking What would John K do They should ve just left the madman in power and ordered a realistic number of episodes I understand Nick was new at making original content but they definitely botched this series Regardless I don t think a high concept show like this can actually produce very many meaningful episodes I honestly believe we got everything good that could come from the original show 1629331821 First the good If you grew up an obsessive fan of Spumco and Ren Stimpy you will not be able to put this book down It s attention to detail is fantastic as is the lengthy lead in as it digs into Mighty Mouse Beanie and Cecil and other things Spumco worked on in the 80s that you normally don t hear much about I do recommend it as it s really the definitive account of this time. Sick little monkeys pdf But some issues that keep giving me pause Keep in mind this book was written before the Buzzfeed article about John K so it seems weird to sound like I am defending him but the author s personal problems with John K really infest every page of this thing making it an unpleasant read John K apparently wrote him a nasty e mail and didn t want to participate in the book But is a proper response to that to get revenge every other page by insulting downgrading and belittling him Even though John K is deserving of criticism and scorn with the new information we have on him the unrelated endless criticism he gets in terms of how to run an animation studio properly gets tiring to read in this lengthy book and the reasons for it are suspect Because the reason isn t because the author is heroically going after John after the Buzzfeed article he s going after him because he got a mean e mail from him which comes off as petty and pointless. Sick little monkeys tv tropes He hates the first season of Ren and Stimpy and seems to dislike much of the second season and in my view isn t even harsh enough on seasons 3 through 5 but that s another issue Why did he want to write this book He calls The Ripping Friends a show I like a lot and which has several standout episodes with stellar animation The Infernal Wedding ManMan and BoyBoy Dr Jean Poole and The Man From Next Thursday pt 1 are all hilarious and great hackwork and basically calls it garbage and indistinguishable from typical Fox Kids Saturday Morning cartoons That is just completely absurd to anyone who watched those episodes I named which are very Ren and Stimpy in spirit and execution I know I m in the minority of loving Adult Party Cartoon I accept that but do I have to read the author slamming it relentlessly for 20 pages This isn t just about me disagreeing with the author Who asked for his opinion Do biographies on Abraham Lincoln offer snide comments on the outfits he wore Why not offer an oral history and biography and dial down the trashing by like maybe 60% The episode guide in the back is yet opportunity for the author to tell you how bad tons of cartoons are. Sick little monkeys pdf And over and over he criticizes John for being in charge at his own animation studio that he founded What s he supposed to do not be the boss Not fix up drawings or want things the way he wants them It s just a bizarre criticism that seems to be implied every few pages How would the author feel if some other people rewrote his book in ways he wouldn t like don t you think he would have a problem with that and want the book the way he wants it Does that make him a ruthless dictator Like even with all the bad things John K did he can t do literally anything in this book that seems to meet the author s high standards Voicing Ren correcting an artist s drawings wanting to oversee layouts all of this is excuse after excuse to say how John K did everything wrong did he Why write a book about his show then One telling part was when he discusses the Ren and Stimpy pilot Big House Blues The author generously includes info about which animator did each scene But then the author when discussing John K s work goes on and on about how clumsily animated and terrible one particular scene is But a look at the list of scenes animators shows John K also did lots of fantastic looking scenes in that episode My point is the author picked one somewhat weird sloppy moment to rag on for a paragraph when he could have just as easily picked five or six really cool and well animated scenes too like the big sleep Which means the author went out of his way to insult the animation in the short specifically by John Which means the author is letting his personal resentments cloud and taint his writing which is a shame And the entire book has this feel It puts you in a nasty mood when reading it. Sick little monkeys crochet hooks That s a fair comparison I think Despite the moans in the introduction that John K didn t contribute to the book and that he and Thad exchanged harsh words this book reads like it could have been lifted from John K s own stream of consciousness Right from chapter one There s the fetishisation of the Warner Bros animation studio system of the 1940s leading to a lot of obnoxious catty asides that everything in animation since then was terrible and worthless until that brief shining moment in the early 90s when Saint John shone out from among the dungheap and then the darkness closed round again until the present day There are even specific phrases weirdly parroted from John K s writing in particular several sneering references to non drawing writers As if to say Guys You ll never guess There are these people called cartoon writers and they re hired to WRITE Not to draw Isn t that nuts Thad tries to explain and soften that stance towards the end of the book but that s way too little and too late to dispel the petty art snob impression Course like I say Thad has to talk about the stupid stuff John K has done The book would be a complete laughing stock otherwise But he can t just lay it out like a sensible researcher or historian Somehow among all of those failings The egoThe expulsion from animation collegeBeing fired by Ralph Bakshi for being uselessDestroying the legacy of the last thing Bob Clampett createdGetting his own studio back into animation despite being by his own admission bad at all aspects of animationCoasting on the talents of better animators he tricked into working for him or that he outsourced work to Being a complete control freak while also being completely indecisive so that work had to be redone and redone and redone until it was way over time and way over budgetRescuing miserable animators from factory studios with no creativity to be miserable under his ludicrous demands and mismanagement and do things exactly as he wantedVirulent harassment of anyone and everyone who dared to leave the Spumco compound and return to their old lives in the material worldAll that and and somehow somehow it was all worth it because John was a unique rebel and once in a blue moon when he tore himself away from tracing 1950s comics he managed to present the man with an eleven minute cartoon about a fat farting cat that is totally a tear jerking apotheosis of art and western culture and much better than that icky Tiny Toons anyway you guys Strewth I wish I was making this up Thad does manage to open up on those faults a bit when the book gets around to John s messy removal from Spumco and points out all the unfair demonisation of those who stayed with Nickelodeon to keep making the show I hear Bob Camp has trouble talking about John at cons 30 years later This feels honest at least and fair enough Nickelodeon should shoulder some of the blame for the fallout But not for being too lenient on his extreme procrastination I think.
